Nested Transitions

Life is full of change and transitions, and often those transitions hold within them even deeper transitions — like a set of nested dolls. For example, we may be experiencing a transition in our personal lives like a separation, a move, or retirement, but that transition is taking place within a larger context of rapid change and transition in the political landscape, or a rapidly changing social circle, or something else entirely. Transitions within transitions can often feel overwhelming, as each new change brings with it a new layer of complexity that requires us to slow down, reflect, and process what’s happening inside and around us, and how we wish to respond.

At the core of this “nested transition” metaphor is the idea that what’s happening on the surface may only be a fraction of what’s going on underneath. Perhaps you're transitioning into a new job, but within that change, there are also personal shifts, family dynamics changing, or even shifts in how you see and understand yourself. Each ‘doll’ in these nested transitions reveals another layer of change, and we need space to understand, explore, and make sense of it all.

In today’s world, it's easy to feel like we have to keep moving forward, pushing through or tuning out. But by giving ourselves permission to slow down, we allow space for honestly naming and reflecting on what’s happening. This allows us to check in with ourselves and understand the significance of each 'doll' or layer we’re moving through and experiencing. It helps us navigate these changes intentionally, without getting lost in them.

Sometimes, transitions need more than just time—they also need a holding space - a place where you’re allowed to pause, without the pressure to perform or rush. Being in a safe space to feel, reflect, and process your emotions is key to understanding the depth of your transition(s).

In our “Shift Happens Divorce/Separation Support Groups” and “Shift Happens Life Transition Support Groups,” (scroll down on the page for more info!) we offer helpful content to navigate through transitions, as well as practical tools to provide more balance and stability in your life. In our 6 session groups, we offer times for mindfulness and meditation in order to tune into the present moment. We also offer journaling prompts to explore both the obvious and hidden changes of any transition, and most importantly, we create a sacred and safe “holding container” where you can speak the truth of what you’re experiencing and how it’s impacting you.

As we navigate the nested transitions in our lives, remember to honor the space you need to reflect, rest, and process. It’s not about rushing through the layers of change—it’s about understanding and embracing each doll, one step at a time.
